Difficult to open and won't close!

We ordered two of these as a set from our homeschooling department in Russia. So we surprised the kids by reading about nesting dolls. We were quickly disappointed when one of the dolls could hardly be opened. When we finally opened it, we couldn't close it again. I think we'll try to polish it. Let's just say I've had a slacker for 5 years.
