We were able to attach it to the gate surrounding our fireplace. It's as pretty as a cat scratching post, looks well made and is very securely attached. Unfortunately, our cat wasn't interested in it, so I can't say anything about the durability - it's not the product. We haven't found a vertical scratching post that our cat will use. I was hoping he'd like this one since it's so reliable (and doesn't wobble like many freestanding ones) but he's not interested. I'm leaving this as it doesn't take up space and hopefully he'll change his mind.
