Review on πŸ“€ Samsung BD-P1500: 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (2008 Model) - Top-notch Performance and Exceptional Clarity by Chris Pettway

Revainrating 3 out of 5

OK as long as it worked on Blu-ray players and recorders

Bought this player in late November 2008 with a Samsung 52" HD LCD TV. As expected, it ran a bit slower than a regular DVD player, but not bad. The picture and sound quality on the Blu-ray discs was very good, although I didn't try to make many comparisons. Traditional DVD upconversion was better than expected. In some cases, a certain Blu-ray disc won't play normally. But that was easily fixed by updating the firmware. Everything was fine until last week. A couple of times I tried to play a Blu-ray disc and the device either gave an error message saying the disc could not be played or it just went back to disc-less mode. After several attempts, these discs will eventually play. But that was only enough for a few slices. Now it won't play Blu-ray discs. It still plays regular discs, but that's a minor difference considering the rest of my home theater setup. I called Samsung support and followed their instructions to make sure the firmware was up to date and the settings were factory reset but to no avail. Samsung told me I'd have to send it in for a repair, for about $150, not much less than a new "entry-level" device. Thus, this home electronic device lasted about 14 months. I think it's pretty worn out and that's why I'm giving it 2 stars now.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • No automatic setup
