I have 6 kids so I used to change diapers a lot. I have used the Diaper Genie Elite before and was very satisfied because it held the smell well and was easy to use with a foot pedal to open and close. However, Diaper Genies only last about 2 years, which is fine if you only have one child as they start being potty trained at around 2 years old. After about 2 years, one or the other part can break and make it necessary to replace the device. . So I checked out Ubbi and after finding a good deal on Revain I went for it. I was a bit frustrated that I had to open the diaper pail with my hands instead of the pedal, but I didn't mind too much. I really wanted Ubbi to like it because it's an American company and it's not plastic. And it was great for the first month, but then it really started to stink. Tries to put soda in the bag. I tried using two packets of baking soda at a time. I tried spraying the jar with Lysol when throwing out the trash. I've tried using plastic grocery bags and changing them every other day. I even washed it thoroughly with dish soap and baking soda and let it dry completely in our very dry climate. All for free. It just stinks! Pun. Even after I just washed it, it still stunk. I ended up trying to use the leftover pockets from my Diaper Genie by simply tying a knot at the bottom and cutting to the desired length. And voila! It worked. So all along, it was the expensive Diaper Genie bags that kept the smell in. Overall, the Ubbi is great because it's made of steel, comes in great colors, and doesn't have a flimsy plastic mechanism to break. However, their claim that any regular bin liner can be used is untrue and expensive. I've used Member's Mark large kitchen bags from Sam's Club and they definitely don't work. Maybe a garbage bag from well-known brands like Hefty or Glad would work better? This Ubbi bucket will probably last longer than a plastic Diaper Genie, but you still need to use Diaper Genie bags for odor control.
