Solution, wires on both sides of the switch. Terminal 1 and 2 are hot; Terminals 3 and 4 are neutral. I have bought several of these switches and cannot get them to light up. I turn the fan on/off with the hot part of the wire between terminals 1 and 2. I also tried terminals 4 and 5. The fan works fine but does not light up no matter how it is connected. This is a 120V AC circuit.
