First, the main reason I prefer to use straps over rope is to protect trees. I'm not sure if this design is best for that. Of course it spreads the surface area of the tackle many times over, but the surface area can be increased more by having the webbing support the weight rather than just covering the tackle. Secondly, this system is not so simple and efficient. The webbing is actually a double layer, and the rope runs all over the tree. In some cases there are 4 layers of material bypassing a specific area. This can be boiled down to one layer (there are many designs on various hammock forums). Ultimately, the system works for beginners. But I think you'll quickly switch to a homegrown or homemade solution that's a lot lighter and better protects logs for about the same price.
