cuts small pieces of glass good for crafting

Used twice; Working with each of them is slightly different, but it works for both. I first came across this tool when I was in chemistry graduate school. We bought large glass-backed TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) plates and cut them into smaller sizes so that they could be used. You could avoid clogs fairly easily when working with TLC plates (and breaking cut lines with gloved hands) since the glass was thin. In this case you only needed to see the cut line for this to work. I've also used it to cut thicker glass at home. Please note that the glass I cut is for sale for crafts and not random glass I found around the house (e.g. not in windows or front doors etc.). So this is exactly the glass you actually wanted to cut with this article. I also use smaller pieces, usually a few inches or less. I mainly cut glass to use in jewelry making (I put copper foil tape on the outside and then use for example a soldering iron on the copper tape) so I don't do anything big or heavy. This tool is ideal for small pieces that I cut. When cutting glass thicker than TLC sheet you have to cut pretty hard (you should hear a noise) before trying to break. I also have a pair of pliers that I sometimes use to break the score. Sharp edges may remain on the glass after cutting, so be prepared and handle with care. I haven't tried too many rounded edges yet; I actually think it would be difficult to use a small wheel to make a full circle and then punch out the circle, but you can definitely make a partially rounded edge. Either way, if you're interested in cutting glass on a small scale for a craft or hobby, it's pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it. It probably helps that someone showed me how to use it in the lab a while ago.

Pros
  • Die cast zinc
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
