Review on Garmin Dakota 10 2.6-Inch Touchscreen Handheld GPS Navigator: Bike and Hike Bundle for Unbeatable Outdoor Navigation by Sam Hansen

Good price, not yet rated

I bought a Dakota 10 bike/hiking kit for my bike. After looking at MUCH more expensive bike units I figured they would probably have the features I needed at a cheaper price. One of the main features I liked was the fact that the Dakota runs on AA batteries. Battery life is pretty good with alkaline batteries, better with rechargeable NIMH batteries, and using power saving features if you leave the backlight on will chew through the batteries. ! The bicycle carrier consists of a mounting plate and lashing eyes. They offer additional I'm not thrilled with the setup but the mount works well enough so far. The device does not take up much space on the steering wheel. The menus are fairly easy to navigate and the screen is easy to read. Not exactly sure what other users are commenting on, but so far I've been able to see the screen pretty well in almost full light. *Some* routes on the maps will take you away from the San Francisco Bike Coalition routes, and with the settings set to "Bike". Apparently Garmin hasn't heard from the SF Bike Coalition yet? Rerouting and rerouting when/when you deviate seems pretty quick (at bike speeds at least) so it's not really a problem. The device will take you anywhere, or at least within a few meters of any address you connect. After that, you need to read the house numbers! It must be connected to a computer to download maps, waypoints and more. Internal storage is the ONLY storage, there is no card slot in this model. The compass function is also NOT active on this model.

Pros
  • High Sensitivity GPS with HotFix Satellite Prediction
Cons
  • Style 90
