Cleans brushes well as described. I don't have a sense of smell, so I can't speak by smell. I didn't take it with me when I traveled. I was amazed (and a little surprised) when I first cleaned the brushes to see how much foundation kept coming out. It felt like the water would never be clean. I thought it worked. I saw someone else comment that the brushes were messed up afterwards. That was not my experience with the product. I gently moved the brush across the rough surface. No problems and clean brushes. Like banks where everything is compact and separate.
