Definitely not surgical steel. I have sensitive ears and the first time I tried them they started hurting my ear and it made it red and swollen so I thought maybe I had changed the earring too fast so I took it out and decided to give it another try a couple weeks after. The second time, it continued to hurt and got swollen again, but I left it in thinking it just needed time, but the color started turning green and leaving green paint on my ears and my piercing was getting infected. I took it out and washed my ear with wound wash and put in the first earring I had from when I got it pierced and within a day the swelling went down and the pain was gone a day after that. Pretty, but not worth it if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
