Review on πŸ”§ Sabrent BK-HDDF: Transform Your 2.5 Inch to 3.5 Inch HD with Our Mounting Bracket Kit! by Greg Usry

WELL DONE, CENTER ALIGNMENT OF HARD DRIVE MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS IN SOME DISC Caddy

I have a Sabrent 3.5" to 2.5" SSD adapter for use in a Dell Optiplex Minitower. Dell Optiplex and Precision models contain 3.5 inch hard drives in a screwless enclosure. They have a handle offset to allow access to the SATA interface location of the 3.5 inch hard drive. This offset is a problem with Sabrent (and most other) 3.5" to 2.5" adapters when used in a container like an Optiplex. In hindsight, this is obvious - Sabrent placed the 2.5" drive in the middle of the 3.5" space. This places the interface partially behind the trolley's handle and blocks the cables! The best design would be to mount the drive with the tray offset to the side. The idea is to position the SATA connector where it would be on a 3.5" drive in the bay. This handles many situations where the hardware configuration depends on the location of the 3.5" SATA interface. I've looked at a few other screwless cases, like the one in the Optiplex. I think the assumption that the SATA connector is where it will be in a 3.5" drive is a pretty common assumption in 3.5" drive cages. In my case, I was able to use a copy saw on a Dell plastic cart to cut off some of the plastic. handling in that particular application. Not something I'd like to do for a client - it doesn't look very professional. To be fair - the Sabrent adapter is well made and finished with heavy gauge steel. The screws were just right. In many applications where it is appropriate to center the disc, the Sabrent will perform well. However, if you are looking at Dell computers or others with hard drive enclosures, of which there are LOTS, be aware of this potential incompatibility and be prepared to modify the caddy if necessary. I also have a Silverstone Tek 3.5" to 2 x 2.5" HDD SSD Bay Converter at the same time. It's very well made and finished but has the same center alignment. For your information. Because it's really well done and even though I had an issue with my app, I'm giving it 4 stars. It's obvious now that I know, but I missed the offset issue before I bought the Sabrent. It has still worked fine for me and I hope this helps someone make an informed purchase if they are in a similar situation.
