This was my first time using a gravel cleaner and some boy didn't give me the box or instructions. Of course, the boy couldn't get it to work properly, blaming the wrong instructions. ANYWAY, a simple YouTube search turned up lots of results and within minutes I had mastered the technique and the water was gushing out. A slight learning curve is required for inexperienced siphon users. To get most of the crap (and I mean crap) out of the gravel, give it a good stir to loosen any nasty things that have settled over the week(s). Immediately after you're done (or are done, whichever you prefer), the water will be pretty cloudy until things settle down again. Remember that this will help siphon off the gravel - it will never be 100% clean (unless you start over, which isn't necessarily good for your aquarium and its inhabitants). It is able to suck up a lot of particles and feces. It also can't handle chunks of fish (I have turtles. They eat fish. Turtles can eat messy). My tank is cleaner, the water is cleaner, and the turtles are probably happier. Hooray.
