Review on ASUS VG249Q Gaming Monitor with FreeSync, 144Hz DisplayPort, Adjustable Height & Pivot, Built-In Speakers, HD by Bob Solorzano

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The perfect combination of features and amazing image quality! But bad OSD and no secondary output

I've been looking for an IPS monitor, 144Hz, 1080p, 24" for a long time and this was the perfect choice! IPS looks insanely better than TN, but I've never been able to find a high refresh rate IPS monitor for a mid-range PC like mine The only high refresh rate IPS monitors I could find were all 27" monitors at 1440p, which my computer couldn't handle enough frames for, or 1080p, which I think is terrible on 27" screens So this monitor was perfect.(By the way I would stay away from the VG259Q. I tried it first and the colors were really messed up and I saw a few others had this problem too. It's an inch bigger and a bit more expensive.) The picture quality is also very good! The settings I chose are: - Racing Mode - Brightness: 100 - Contrast: 80 - Color Temperature: Custom Mode: R: 90 G: 95 B: 100 - Trace Free: 100 Trace Free got me a little confused, but that's just what Asus says Overdrive, by the way. I suggest increasing it to 100. At 100 I don't see any artifacts and it makes the monitor's response time appear faster. From what I've said so far I would easily give this monitor 5 stars, but I have two main issues with it. 1. For some reason, Asus didn't include their awesome joystick controls in the OSD, opting for a vintage button row instead. My previous Asus monitor had a joystick and the OSD navigation was much nicer.2. There is no AUX output on the monitor and the built-in speakers don't sound very good. Oddly, they have an AUX input in case you want to connect your iPod to a monitor and jam. Of course when I use my computer I can use its aux output and connect it to my speakers, but I like to game. Console games are sometimes on the monitor as well, and I don't have an easy way to route the sound to the speakers either. To fix this I bought this HDMI adapter which puts out an extra signal and I use it to connect to my speakers. Overall the monitor is amazing and those few issues aren't the end of the world. I still highly recommend it.
