Review on πŸ”§ StarTech.com Socket 478 CPU Cooler Fan (FAN478) – Efficient Cooling with Heatsink & TX3 Connector, Black by James Trapkin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fits Retro Socket 7 Mainboard

I was able to use this fan with a Pentium MMX 233 processor without any problems with size or other chips sticking out of the socket. Their price is a bit high but the quality of the heatsink is fantastic. I give it four stars because the fan hums a bit. Make sure you have some way to control the fan speed, otherwise it will be very fast and loud, which is to be expected for such a small device. Even when I was able to regulate the RPM as slowly as possible, the coil whine was still there. I wouldn't say it's unexpected, but for those trying to keep the system quiet, you can upgrade the fan yourself. Coming from a passive cooler, I had a hard time justifying myself in this system. Instead, I went for the best case fans, which are nearly silent and keep the passive cooling. However, I am keeping this socket 7 cooler because I have other builds that might use it and it is going to be really difficult to come up with this quality.

Pros
  • Fan and Cooling
Cons
  • Poorly designed
