I was right in thinking that "aluminum level" was too good to be true. The aluminum is just sheet metal that is screwed from underneath around the magnet areas, which deforms the aluminum and makes precision impossible as the aluminum sheet cannot sit perfectly flat. The screws themselves do not protrude, but they deform the cover's aluminum material. I rely on them to be the "dead nut" for my job. If you just want a rough level, that'll do, but if you want something with reliable accuracy - what the level is actually for (otherwise look at it) - leave that thing alone. Bite your teeth and get a Klein, or if you REALLY want to get OCD, get a Greenlee.
