I have a similar pin tester. It also has a small flare. But the impressive part of it is the exit tester. I also have wiring, polarity, and GFI testers, but the socket tester's non-contact voltage is more sensitive than a pin tester. Just tape the right side to the wall where the outlet or light switch is and you can see the wiring running behind the wall. For a light switch, turn on the light switch and you can see the wiring running behind the wall to the light. When the light is off you can see the electricity flowing behind the wall to the switch. The pen tests the socket by inserting the probe into the socket. You can tell where power and ground is, but the stylus isn't sensitive enough to determine voltage just by touching the wall next to the outlet. The NCV portion of the exit test does this. better than i expected.
