We chose this brand because it had a digital tuner. We don't have a cable and would have to buy a converter anyway. It is a very complex mechanism compared to a VCR and like a computer, it can sometimes take a while to process various commands and sometimes it needs to be restarted. The guide covers the basics, but there are many ways to go wrong and they don't give you on-screen messages to figure out why something isn't working the way you want it to. Also, the terminology on the remote control isn't intuitive, so I always have the manual handy (why is the button I use to watch my shows on DVD called "direct access"?). I definitely like the concept of digital recording. via video recordings of television programs. It's easier to find the specific show you're interested in, and you don't have to worry about accidentally overwriting another show. I'd rather buy a machine with a hard drive, but TiVo is the only real option and I don't want to pay a subscription fee. deal with it, I would say it works fine.
