Review on Shure A27M Stereo Microphone Adapter by Sean Flint

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Bulletproof design, strong support and easy installation

I record live classical guitar in stereo with matched microphone pairs. For years I've settled for a K&M mic stand: easy to carry, but cumbersome and slow to set up. To make matters worse, the microphones shifted at the slightest impact. So I bought an expensive Shure A27M stereo microphone adapter. On the contrary, the angle and distance between the microphones of the A27M is easily adjustable and firmly fixed. The design of the A27M is simple but ingenious: a vertical adapter with microphone mounts on rotating tubes. Loosen the cap to adjust the angle of the microphone by rotating the tubes. Unscrew the cap and flip the tubes to change the spacing between different sized mics. The A27M's vertical orientation means less volume than a stereo bar and allows for use in tight spaces. I've only used the A27M with a pair of small Neumann KM-184 condenser mics in an XY configuration, but it worked great: easy fine-tuning of position, good balance on stands, and drift-free setup even when moving around the studio. It's a hefty adapter - it weighs more than my mics so use a sturdy stand. Yes, it's pricey for an adapter, but it's worth it: bulletproof construction, tight latches, and easy, precise positioning.
