Review on Effortless Jalapeno Coring: The Norpro Grip-EZ Pepper Corer by Traci Loge

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Almost perfect for fruit and veg

This coring tool does a great job removing the first 2/3 of a pepper. However, the last 1/3 will get you there! Serrated edge near the handle. Use these to cut off the top of the peppers. Then insert the tip of the blade into the edge of the membrane and start twisting. The tool does a really good job of scraping *most* of the membrane off the inside of the peppers and gathering the seeds into a neat clump. The notches on the inside of the tool will then grip the membrane/seed ball allowing you to easily pull it out. However, the tool may not be perfect for peppers of all sizes. As the sides of the peppers taper to a narrow point, the tool can't reach any further. Therefore there is no way to get the seeds or the membrane out of the last 1/3 of the peppers. Depending on how you cook the peppers, the last bit of seed/membrane may be enough to leave too much heat in the peppers. While the grilled peppers with core and stuffing looked amazing, most of my guests found them to be too hot. . I think I may have to cut them in half lengthwise again so I can peel them completely. If possible, try to buy peppers with almost no curvature, as it is impossible to cut off a curved tip. Also look for peppers with a blunt, rounded nose instead of a sharp point. You will work better with this tool. So I almost love this instrument. It's almost fantasy, but not quite right for me. EDIT (01/30/12): I've been using this tool for over six months now and it keeps growing on me. I figured leaving some heat on the tops of the peppers wouldn't be so bad. Otherwise, you can remove too much pungency and end up with unleavened pepper. I think it was a bit of a learning curve for me too. Now I am happier with this tool than when I started. This is definitely a keeper and I recommend it.
