This is a good counter/meter, I use it all the time and it takes a lot of abuse. I just recently read the reviews and was surprised at how many negative comments there were. If he died today, I would most likely buy another one. It doesn't work well on very low power hardware as shipped, but adjusting the sensitivity or "detection level" in the menu helps a lot (lower # means more sensitive as far as I remember). It seems some users also missed the F2 key, which stops the counter (switches between "Stop" and "Run"). Yes, there is no storage, but that's a $50 counter. I've been using this counter for over 3 years and it works great. No, this isn't the $1,800 lab meter I bought 25 years ago, but it should serve the average electronics hobbyist well. It's comfortable, like everyone else, and I use it several times a week. I don't think I've had to turn on my bank counter more than a few times during that time. A new battery will likely be needed soon, but it shouldn't be a big deal to change it when the time comes.
