I downgraded this product because of an issue and the nature of the issue. After 8 uses the plastic case with the cable connections and probably the thermostat fell apart. it didn't melt, it literally turned into a scaly material and just fell apart. It was used as intended. The casting materials and body material used are clearly of poor quality and not suitable for the application. I bought it to heat water for mixing borax. That works great. I heat water from 42 to 150 F, often in a high pH solution, and it works great. I've used it over a dozen times and there has been no sign of degradation on the metal surfaces. It's 1000 watts so it takes about 9 hours to reach the temperature of the amount of water I'm heating. The heat shield surrounding the heating element is very important as my tank is plastic. The heat shield sits right on the bottom of the tank, with an element recessed into the shield: there's no sign of the plastic overheating.
