I recently found my old computer in the basement and wanted to see if there were any old photos on it before sending it in for recycling. I bought this adapter and was impressed by its versatility. I was concerned that I would have to remove the power supply from the old PC to get the hard drive (molex powered) working, but was surprised that the box already had a cable that fits the adapter! It runs on its own AC power so you don't have to worry about using the correct USB port. The drives I used were old IDE and some 1st gen SATA drives and the adapter fitted all of them perfectly with no connection issues. I also connected a DVD drive from an old PC and it worked! I was able to play the entire DVD movie without skipping or lag. On its own, it doesn't take up much space on my desk (about the size of a business card), and there's a small power button to turn it on. It's disabled when not in use, so Windows doesn't have to turn it on after every action in File Explorer. All in all, this is the way to go if you travel a lot as it takes up almost no space compared to "toaster" models.
