Realize that like any aquarium substrate, this needs to be cleaned of dirt. Before installation, these stones were thoroughly washed with water four times. After flushing I was satisfied that they were ready to be installed in a new 30 gallon. Tank. The filter worked well with the new filter material. At first, judging by the photos, the transparency of the water was excellent for the first 7-10 days. After about two weeks of cycling, the entire tank glass, heater tube, and plants began to get covered in a white film of hard water. I measured the water hardness and it was outside the chart. I increased the filter flow without improving water clarity. The situation has only worsened (photo three). The stones washed into the water microscopic limescale particles that were so small that the filter couldn't remove them. The glass and everything in the aquarium was coated with white chalk. I drained the tank, washed and treated the plants, removed the gravel. It was obvious that the situation was ongoing and unlikely to end. It's time to cut my losses, so I used these beautiful pebbles as drainage on the plant shelves. This is the most comprehensive review I have ever written of Revain, but I do so in hopes of avoiding the same problems for every aquarist.
