This GPS has many reviews. It seems many of the low reviews are more in line with Gramin as a company and/or its marketing/pricing policies. There's a lot more information in the sparse printed documentation, and a little more in the base camp app, which you can download (for free) from the Garmin website. USA with the intention of using it for off-road hiking on the many excellent trails in West Virginia and Virginia. Anyone looking for GPS for car/road navigation should probably look for another product like Nuvi. The carabiner is firmly fixed with a latch on the battery cover. Very well built. If you don't want to use a Garmin strap, there's an anchor loop for a lanyard strap. The Garmin strap clip covers the battery compartment latch (good for security but a little inconvenient when you need to change batteries as the clip slides tight and is difficult to slip off. I expect this will get easier with time) . The battery compartment latch rotates a quarter turn and a tether clip protects it from accidental opening. The GPS itself is very good. Solid and rigidly built. Operation is intuitive and should be easy for anyone familiar with personal electronics and/or cell phones to use. The user interface consists of a "joystick" or "puck" for cursor control, up/down arrows. to control zoom level, backlight/on/off, and menu and back buttons. The menu structure and return takes some time because each function of the device has a separate submenu (map, compass, settings, etc.). and you need to press "Back" to return from them to the main menu (ghost). The initial setup is quick and easy: select your language and you're done. Mine set the launch position (with a very accurate altitude) very quickly - less than 1 minute. The 3-axis compass is not calibrated manually, you have to go to the compass menu and select it (I recommend doing this regularly) and follow the instructions. Basically, you will be asked to rotate the device multiple times around each axis. Overall I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone looking for off-road GPS navigation.
