Review on Revolutionize Your Cubing Skills with the GoCube Connected Smart Rubiks Puzzle! by Dewitt Graham

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great app and smart features, but the design of the Speedcube is not very good.

In this test I will mainly compare the GoCube with the Gan 356i/356i Play Cubes. It's maybe two (three) leading Smart Cubes and full disclosure - while I really like Gan Cubes, I don't really like Gan Smart Cubes. In a word, GoCube is the best smart cube out there. . Why did I only give 3/5 stars? I don't think this is the best smartcube choice for speedcubers or people who want to become speedcubers as this cube's design, styling, curves, corner cut, colors etc. are very similar to a standard speedcube. So if you're buying this cube to get better at speed-cubing, it probably won't help. You will most likely get better in the GoCube as it is too different from the Cube to transfer any skill improvement to regular Speedcubes. First, it's fairly soft (meaning the middle of the sides sticks out the most, making it appear "chubby"). There's also a fairly prominent corner edge that just shouldn't be there when the GoCube is trying to make it look like a regular Speedcube. This edge framing makes the side and corner pieces significantly smaller than the center/middle pieces, making it difficult to match colors for a cube assembly. It looks like the first version of this cube has a silver gray border around the edges, while this version has a transparent border around the edges to allow it to glow. Ironically, although the edge frame of both versions appears to be identical, the corners and edges of the first version appear to be more normally square than the second version, which has more square corners and edges. cube, GoCube is good but definitely not great. To clarify for anyone who owns multiple speedcubes, it's not as bad as a real Rubik's Cube, but nowhere near as good as the $6 Yuxin Little Magic Speedcube. This is definitely far from the performance of the Gan 356i or other high-end speedcubes like Gan, Moyu, Qiyi, Yuxin, etc. The GoCube is pretty rough and noisy and tends to stall or at least catch up when you're not are very precise turns (which tends to fly out the window when you try to go as fast as possible). Here, too, the corners are extremely rounded due to the design, which makes it difficult to get a good grip with finger tricks. The biggest performance issue with the GoCube is that it cannot be tuned. I don't see any way to loosen or tighten the tension and it seems like the only way to change or improve performance is to lube. Since almost all other speedcubes (including smartcubes) allow at least some sort of customization, I'm a bit surprised that this one doesn't offer anything. Packaging, presentation and accessories are very good. However, they contain only the most basic instructions (quick start page). This is the best smartcube app I have ever seen. I like it much more than Goose's CubeStation app (which is pretty bad and unreliable as many of them are written in c). I don't like how the GoCube's charging holes are in the yellow side of the center cover. I think Gan found a better solution by putting longer pins between the pieces so you can't really see the loading holes. Did I like GoCube? Yes. It's a lot of fun and the app is great again. However, because it's so different from the regular Speedcube, I wasn't able to get my usual solve time, and when I went back to my regular Speedcubes (especially for the direct comparison to the Gan 356i Play Smartcube), I quickly realized just how different it really is gocube. If the GoCube was $40 I would probably keep it for myself. However, I just don't get enough use from it (other than general enjoyment) to keep it up at its current price of $80, so I returned it.
