To be honest, I would laugh at my SO for his water hiking sandals. I would laugh and call them "sexy" shoes. Well, it turns out I needed a pair for a recent hike, and I had to take my word for it. I really liked these shoes for our trip to Zion and the Narrows. Reinforced toes and Vibram soles did a great job in the water and around slippery rocks (I'm clumsy and expected to fall at least once, but these bad boys pulled it off). I did manage to get a few small rocks during the water hike (which chose to stick with it on the way back), but that was easily remedied with a handy quick release to squeeze them out and flush them out. So now we both have a pair of "sexy" shoes that come in really handy when washing cars or bathing the dog.
