Not a replacement for Craftsman 9-17816
The filter in my Craftsman Shop Vac has a threaded stem and uses a plastic nut to attach the filter. This filter, which has the same part number as my vacuum cleaner repair manual, uses a friction fit that is too loose for the threaded rod and the filter is 1/2 inch longer. I compressed the filter to make it "work". ", but this is not the equivalent of the filter to the original. The photos attached are what is shown in the manual for the original filter head.
