What this serger does: The threads lock around the seam to prevent fraying and trim the seam allowance as you sew. Before we bought this 1034DX serger and after reading all the reviews I noticed some confusion about the differences between 1034D and 1034DX. There are a few. When asked a few questions about the differences between the two, I noticed a response from a Brother customer service representative who mentioned that the only difference was the LED lighting. It was quite interesting and I was expecting a more knowledgeable response from a company representative. Anyway, enough whining. Make sure, that you have product code 884-B03, indicated on the sticker on the back of the 1034DX. The differences I noticed are: 1.) The controls on the 1034DX are on the right side. 1034D on the left. 2.) The 1034DX does not have tension release buttons above each tension disc like the 1034D. On the 1034DX, raise the presser foot lifter to release all washers. 3.) With the 1034DX, thread from right to left. The bottom gripper is the right blue tension disc. The upper looper comes next through the green tension disc. Then the right needle is red and the left needle is yellow. (See the video for the Lock M343D. Same machine, just Canadian version I believe.) 4.) When threading the bottom looper on the 1034DX (and on the Lock M343D) there is a lever (step #. 9). Move the bottom gripper. to facilitate access. This lever is NOT on the 1034D.5. ) The thread goes through the threadwood a little differently and through 4 plastic holes instead of metal guides. 1034D has a regular bulb. Basically, if you watch a video of someone refueling a 1034D, it's not the same. First they thread green and then blue. I noticed that the DVD that came with the 1034DX has higher video quality. The streaming part is really helpful. Make sure that the lower looper thread runs behind the upper looper when threading. I have a 1034DX with code 884-B03 so I noticed these differences right away. WHAT I LIKE: 1.) The bottom looper has a lever (#9) to pull it out and make threading easier. This is not on the 1034D. (see picture) 2. ) The included DVD is in HD and does a good job of explaining the streaming process, which can be a bit tricky. 3. ) LED lights. I don't know if it will be lighter than 1034D, but it will last longer on the sewing foot. You don't have to do each one by hand or zero the dials. NOT SO GREAT: 1.) I didn't like that they reduced the power supply a bit on the 1034DX. Probably some due to the LED bulb but not sure how much on the motor. 2.) Pedal doesn't seem to engage at low speeds. You have to push it maybe 1/3 and then the machine starts to run a little faster. Once it starts, you can slow it down until you're comfortable. It's like pulling away in second gear instead of first. - Raising the sewing foot releases all the tension discs at the same time. You don't have to do each one by hand or zero the dials.
