Review on πŸ“‘ Cradlepoint MBR95: Unleashing Efficient Wireless Connectivity by Jason Winkfield

Works well, MUCH better as a cell phone hotspot

This device paired with a Pantech/Verizon UML290 worked right out of the box. Setup was very easy and the throughput is orders of magnitude higher than the cellular "hotspot" I use. Recently updated the firmware - no problems observed. I haven't noticed any issues with 4G/IP connectivity or disconnection yet. It takes about a minute for the device to boot up and establish a working 4G/IP connection, but I don't see that as a problem. As a Linux/networking engineer, I am happy to have support for various router features such as port forwarding, CLI and other services. Personally, I prefer an Ethernet connection for most of my systems, but the wireless connectivity (for laptops and tablets) is still better than the Droid X2 hotspot I've used before. I chose an external antenna with UML290 modem (highly recommended for rural areas). The antenna improved the signal level by about 15 dBm. In general, the best signal corresponds to the best throughput. I'd like to see more detailed/useful status information in the "Dashboard" and override session timeouts, but that's just a minor annoyance, not a problem. It's a massive improvement over what we were stuck with before, and the ping times are reasonable. In comparison, satellite Internet is like a dial-up connection.
