Let me start by saying that the cost of refilling this thing can really go up if you put more than solid litter in it, or if you have a lot of cats. If you use non-clumping litter and/or only have a few cats I'm sure it's pretty economical. Each week I burn supplies, shovel away solid waste and dirty bedding for 8 cats. If I wasn't so happy with how this product complements the other changes I've made to our trash situation, I might see a star on the price of the refills, but I'm willing to ignore that for now. Also, I've found some hacks on the internet to make your own fillers for a lot less when it comes down to it. Now let me explain how I became an owner and fell in love with my Litter Genius. I've lived with cats for ages. I have been searching for the perfect filler for over 30 years and my entire adult life. I've tried them all, like most longtime cat owners. I am now sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 other adults, 8 cats and 5 high sided litter boxes. We recently switched to Fresh News paper pellet litter due to an allergy in one of my cats. If the words "paper junk" are enough to make you question my judgment and stop reading, let me be clear: I'm not talking about Yesterday's News, which I couldn't stomach. Fresh News' color is light gray instead of dark green, making it MUCH easier to identify solid waste. Even when dirty, Fresh News changes color from light gray to dark gray instead of dark green to dark green, making it easier to distinguish between dirty and unused pellets. The Fresh News granules hold their shape quite well even when dirty, unlike Yesterday's News, which broke easily, leaving enough urine-soaked paper flakes to stink after a day or two in the apartment. I think Fresh News also has baking soda to help with the smell. The larger pellet size results in fewer pellets being flung out of the box, and because they don't break as much, the paper flakes hardly grind. All this to say I was very happy with my new litter situation - NO smell of urine. or tracking when scooping twice a day, and also washing the litter box is very easy because the paper doesn't stick to the box. But there were downsides to scooping out the leave-in twice a day, too: Using a plastic bag meant I had to either throw the bag away every time I picked it up, or tie it up and open it again the next time. The first option resulted in us running out of our normally overflowing supply of plastic bags (read: waste), and the second option was pretty gross. Also, guessing I'm not that smart, I just shoveled into a bag on the floor instead of using one of our little bins to support the bag, which resulted in an annoying spill every time. Type: Garbage Genie. This little contraption provides the perfect waste container for my now perfect (or as close to it as possible) poo. As I said, we have 5 boxes that are picked up twice a day. There's a little handle built into the back of the Genie, so every morning and night we're pushing it from box to box, scooping out all the dirty junk and solid waste (when I see the box just needs to be thrown out, I'll grab one plastic bag so that you don't fill up the genie unnecessarily). When the Litter Genie gets heavy it's a good idea to prop the ground up, but I've never had it open or anything like that. Even if this is the case, the filler is always in the pouch unless you start a new one. Speaking of the process, it's pretty easy to tie up a full bag and start a new one. I'm sure other reviews talk more about the mechanics of how this works, so just trust me it doesn't really matter. The only thing that is a bit frustrating is opening the inner cap when changing the fountain pen. Maybe mine is defective or I just haven't figured out the best way to do it, but it gets me every time. It's not a big deal though considering we change it once a week and I don't have to do it all the time. I think our Litter Genie has been with us for a few months now and I'm honestly not complaining. I sprinkle some paper towels with a wonder of nature and occasionally wipe down the inner lid, dustpan, and trash can; Sometimes I do it with the rest of the inside too. But I haven't had to wash it fully yet and it doesn't smell, despite the amount of waste that goes through it in a day! I really hate products that are made for convenience but have an overly complicated aspect that makes you wonder if it's worth it, so I'm happy to report that with this wonder product, Litter Genie, that's not the case is.
