Our 5 year old GE water softener was showing ERR codes (and didn't work or worked for 8 minutes and then gave an ERR code). and after cleaning and checking the water flow areas (venturi and inlet valve) we found that in some positions the motor worked with the motor cables and not when the cables moved. Ordered and installed a new motor with no problems - and we still got an ERR code (another code appeared). Ordered and fitted a new rotor position switch (a bit more work but very doable) and voila! There are no more ERR codes and everything works great (no grinding noise). Two cheap parts. (Not a $100 service call just to come to your place.) At least for GE softeners, ERR 1 is a wiring check (electrical connection points - (unplug unit - turn on bypass), clean with contact cleaner if needed) - ERR 3 or ERR 4 - Check valve motor wiring harness or this area. If the motor runs but the rotary valve does not move, the motor may be defective or the rotary valve blocked. (Also check the position switch if it doesn't sense the position of the rotor valve. We had to replace it for example.) ERR 5 is a test of the timer or the wiring harness for the timer. I found this information on the internet. (GE's support line isn't very helpful unless they tell you what the manual says and then just want to send a tech.) This part was key to repairing and extending the life of our softener.
