On my 1994 Toyota 4runner the antenna is a steel rod about 2.5ft long which is great for hitting every edge of the garage door as well as branches and trees off road. Bought a 13" antenna of the same type, looked great in comparison but the range for HD radio wasn't great. Bought this 17" version, it still looks a lot better than the factory antenna and the Reception is almost the same if not the same. Ease of installation is subjective, I turn the wrench a lot so it took about 5 minutes to install. Comes with multiple adapters for all types of mounting brackets. I used a red snap on the antenna adapter and a blue snap on the antenna for the 4runner in case I ever want to take it off. Would I buy again, good size and reception. Like many others, I can't say anything about "car wash protection", I don't use commercial car washes. Great product, I would buy again.
