Review on 🧼 Clean Scan by Scotch-Brite - Discover the Hygiene Level of Your Home - Test and Improve Your Surface Cleaning by Holly Naragon

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Expensive for household testing but cheaper compared to lab testing

a 3M Scotch-Brite surface cleaning test kit that was developed in cooperation with Phylagen Laboratories. It comes with 9 swabs, control liquid and 4 containers (before and after cleaning) of stabilizing liquid to store microbes for testing. It comes with a two-day shipping label for shipping to a testing lab in California. It was easy to use the kit but you need to register online and create an account. In addition, you must agree to the terms and data usage, but this gives you the option to opt out of product promotional emails. It checks the total number of bacteria, various fungi, several viruses, including influenza and coronavirus. After the test is complete, it took me 5 days, you can see the results online in your account. The report does not show aggregate or quantitative information other than comparing 100 US homes (not sure if these homes have average housekeeping, better or worse). The comparison is made for the total number of bacteria and Aspergillus, while for the rest it shows whether they are present or not (as shown in the attached figure). At $250, this is expensive for the average household, but for all of these tests, it's relatively much cheaper when done in medical labs. I think the key is knowing what's hiding around your home and being able to target them with the best cleaning methods. Several cleaning tips were given (e.g. keep the house dry, use a dehumidifier and clean the rooms at least twice, etc.) along with the test results.
