This fan cranks out the heat. It radiates the heat several feet out. On the higher setting, it will start to burn your hand if you hold it within 2" of it. But you can actually brush up against or touch the grate and not get burned. So whatever that grate is made of, it is effective. With my first use, it emitted that seasonal first time turning on the furnace smell but that quickly dissipated. For mobility, this is light and the carrying handle is well designed. It will heat up a small or medium room fast. In our 3 car garage, it raised the temperature 1 degree, 54 to 55 after 25 minutes, although that might not be a fair test because of where our thermometer is located. But it convinced me it would warm the garage over time. Because of its mobility, I'll just set it closer to where I'm working. I'll also use this in our camper when we're hooked up to power on a cold night. The only reason for the 4 stars, it would be nice to have a middle setting and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how that safety bar connected. Instructions were a bit vague. But if you use some common sense it's not needed. But I actually do like this heater.
