Review on πŸ”Œ Unitek USB 3.0 to SATA III Adapter: Connect 2.5/3.5 Inch HDD/SSD and Optical Drives, UASP Support by Nick Mcvey

Simple, cheap and just works.

The same device can be found under several brand names, some with a blue LED like this one, others with a green LED. It's easy to tell that it's the same product by looking at images from different brands. I don't know who the maker of the source is, but it's made with a pretty high build quality. It was handled very carefully for fear of damaging it. It is very compact and the connectors fit well: USB, SATA and AC. B, but 2.5 feet or so should be enough if your PC case is on a table. My computer sits on the floor under my desk and the table top is 3 feet by 6 feet, so I bought the longer cable I needed to use this unit with the drives on my desk. I don't have any SSDs yet to try this out, but it will fit and work with all of my 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives, as well as my 5.25" optical drives. A power adapter is NOT required for typical 2.5" drives, but is required for 3.5" hard drives and 5.25" optical drives. It can also be hot-swapped if the computer is not accessing the attached drive at the time. The speed seems sufficient for a USB3 device like this. I burned and reviewed a 4.5GB single layer DVD in about 8 minutes and recorded at a fixed speed of 8X. One point worth noting is that this device puts a connected drive into idle or "sleep mode" after a period of inactivity while it's plugged in and turned on, and the "wake time" is noticeable. This is most obvious with hard drives; not so much with optical drives. Overall good quality, reasonable price and a very handy little device.

Pros
  • SATA to USB Adapter: Connects to a SATA device via USB. You don't need drivers to enjoy its outstanding performance. Support Windows 7/8/10/MAC OS 8 or above.
Cons
  • unreliable
