Review on ๐Ÿ’ฏ Reliable and High-Performance Western Digital WD2001FASS 2 TB Caviar Black Desktop Hard Drive with 3GB/s SATA Interface and 7200 RPM by Bobby Inappropriate

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Huge, powerful and quiet internal hard drive

This high-performance, high-tech 2TB drive from Western Digital has proven itself very well so far. The most unique feature of this drive is off-platform parking and power failure lockout. With this feature, the platters are unlikely to be damaged by impacts due to head impact due to rough handling during transportation. Speaking of shipping, like many other online retailers, Revain.com should do better packaging for OEM hard drives for shipping. My drive was shipped double boxed, the outer box is slightly larger with an air bag on one end. The inner box comes from Western Digital with two plastic shock absorbers at the ends and looks adequate. The outer packaging offers little to no protection from impact damage. The outer box had to be big enough to be covered with foam. Another desirable feature of this drive is that it has two processors and two head activators for precise tracking. The secondary activator uses piezoelectric technology to very precisely tune to the exact track on the record. This of course improved performance somewhat. I bought this hard drive to use as extra storage for my computer. I find that this hard drive is also a great boot drive for Windows due to its high performance. It also produced the least vibration when powered on of any hard drive I've ever bought. It's as quiet as my Seagate hard drives. The only difference is that it sometimes makes a thud when the power is cut off when the heads are parked and locked. I'm paranoid based on my experience with my last two Seagate hard drive purchases where the number of reassigned partitions increased shortly after going live. Immediately after installation, to make sure I had a clean drive, I ran Western Digital's own Data Lifeguard For Windows to check for bad partitions by running a full surface scan. This software can be downloaded from the Western Digital website. . I also scanned the surface of this disc with the HD Sentinel Pro. Both tests passed without problems. Final Thoughts: Because this Western Digital is better constructed than any of my previous hard drives, I'm hoping for long term reliability. So far I'm totally impressed with the performance I'm getting. When I ran the test, the maximum read speed was almost 140MB per second and the minimum was around 70MB per second. Take for example transferring files from one hard drive to another. I did a file copy experiment when I copied files from my old drive to the new drive. When copying a file one by one, the speed remains almost full, about 100MB per second. But when I copy two files at the same time, the speed drops to about 25MB per second for two files. I try again to copy the two files received at this point, one file is copied to the new drive and the other file is copied to my boot drive. The speed also drops back down to around 25MB per second for two files. This proves that the bottleneck is on my old drive. I tried this transfer test again, except this time the source is a new drive. I copied a file to my old drive and at the same time copied another file to my boot drive. Only this time, the speed stays the same whether I'm copying one file or copying two or more files at the same time. Transfer speeds stay close to 100MB per second whether you're copying one file or two files at a time.
