Review on Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver: πŸ”Š Unavailable from Manufacturer, but Still in Demand by Kevin Grizzle

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great basic receiver at a very good price

I have had several Sherwood receivers in the past and they have not worked for me. All have the same shortcomings: 1. They stopped working after about a year for unknown reasons.2. Volume controls are unreliable. The volume sometimes gets much lower when you try to crank it up. Sometimes the volume is greatly increased when there is no one near the receiver. The volume control is not touchable; a feeling that the nob is not connected to anything.3. Cheaper Sherwood receivers aren't as easy to use as this Onkyo receiver. The Onkyo receiver has knobs to adjust balance, treble, and bass. The Sherwood receivers I've used don't have these physical controls, but they can be accessed via the remote control. I'm not sure as I'm blind and can't use the remote control. None of that applies to this Onkyo receiver. Management. My Onkyo receiver didn't die of unknown cause, but got soaked due to a wiring problem in the barn it was in. For several weeks he turned off the main amplifiers after a few seconds of operation. I then took it home and wanted to open it to see if there was a fixable issue. After staying in the house for several months, I finally got around to checking to see if there were any obvious problems inside. When I opened it up I found the circuit board was clean and in good condition. After connecting the receiver, I found that it works fine now. I'd be very surprised if the Sherwood receiver could stand the soaking. Checks on Sherwood receivers. I particularly like that the input selectors are well placed and don't take up as much front panel space as the Sherwood's selectors. The presence of physical knobs for adjusting balance, treble and bass is a definite plus. With physical controls, this Onkyo receiver is very easy to use, even for the blind. All controls feel nice and work as expected. It's not the most powerful receiver, but more than enough for use in one room and with reasonably efficient speakers. This receiver may not be suitable if you want to feel the house shake while listening, but it offers excellent quality for those who don't need to feel their music.

Pros
  • 50w/ch x 2ch
Cons
