Review on Black Oster Electric Wine Opener by Jaleel Pruitt

Still going strong after 2.5 years

UPDATE: 2/17/19. Well, my device has finally stopped working, but I believe it's because the battery has finally reached its maximum number of charges. I opened it up to see if I could change the battery (see picture) but it's a bundle of three AA batteries packaged with the terminals soldered. Replacing this would be a lot more of a hassle than just buying a new knife for around $18. I estimate that I have removed about 600 corks with this opener since I bought it on 04/30/2011. It turns out about 3.3 cents per cork. It took almost 8 years! Pretty good if you ask me. Okay, I have to add my 2 cents. I've had this device for about 2-1/2 years. We open 1-2 bottles of wine a week so we opened around 125-175 bottles. It's still going strong. My wife, who has no technical skills, learned it after several attempts. I sent one as a gift to my relatives in another city, and the next time I visited them, they said they didn't know how to use it. I wonder if this explains the problems some people are having? I had no problems. It's a little difficult to get started with the synthetic cork, but all you have to do is slowly increase the downward pressure and the synthetic cork will remove with ease. You don't have to press hard. I wonder if that's why some people broke the screw? Just a thought. A commenter said that the video review showed that it was very noisy. I think it's not as loud as an electric knife and it only takes about 20-30 seconds to remove the cork so you don't hear it for as long as an electric knife. I have to agree with the person who said that for $19 you can't expect something to last for years. If mine breaks tomorrow, I'll buy another one. If mine ever breaks I'll update this review and let people know, but so far it's working fine and I'm very happy with it. UPDATE: 5/6/2015 On July 2nd last year (2014) I started tracking the bottles I opened with this bottle opener. As of 7/2/14 I have up to 72 bottles and it's still working great.

Pros
  • Opens a bottle in seconds
Cons
  • Very expensive
