This is a great USB CD/DVD drive as new PCs and laptops no longer come with CD/DVD drives. I edit a lot of video for events so I need a DVD burner and that helps. After unpacking the disc, this product is quite light which makes it easy for me to carry it around. It's definitely a portable size, not something I could just slip into my slim laptop bag, but something that fits in my backpack. This DVD drive is retractable, which worries me about constant opening and closing, but so far we haven't had any issues with the new unit. I would say don't pull on it too hard as you won't damage or break the hinge. There is a forced opening hole that can be used when the DVD won't come out. It's just plug and play, so you don't have to worry about installing a drive. I've tried this on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. I haven't tried this with a Mac, but it has a Type-C connector, so you can plug it into Type-C and get better transfer speeds. There were no problems, everything is connected and working. I haven't tried this on any of the older Windows like XP and Vista so I have no idea if this will even work. The USB cable is an integrated USB 3.0 and Type-C cable. The cable is built into the DVD drive again, so it's not that easy to replace, which is a drawback. However, this makes it easier to store the cable on the DVD drive itself. USB 3.0 and Type-C ensure faster transmission. Reading and writing is quite fast, depending on which USB port is used. If it's 3.0, you're running at a speed close to that of an internal CD drive. I definitely recommend only using the 3.0 speed as it offers faster and more reliable transfer speeds. If it's Type C, it seems much faster than 3.0 in terms of writing. It could burn a 4GB ISO in about 10-15 minutes. I've created a few DVDs with it and there don't seem to be many connection or video corruption issues. Make sure the unit is on a stable surface as you don't want the disc to bounce as this could damage the laser or the tray. It's not too loud and quite quiet. Another thing to note is that this DVD drive does not require an additional USB port to power the device, so that's a plus for me. All in all, it's a pretty good product, and it's a great thing since DVD drives aren't standard on newer laptops.
