Great carrier, bad smell

Overall I love this carrier as does my 5-6 lb Yorkshire. I bought the medium size and it's perfect because she can sink into it to lie down and sleep. She can also sit comfortably in it with her head hanging down. My only complaint is the smell. It smells like it's been treated with something. I've only tried it at home and washed it before taking my Yorkie outside. I'm worried the smell might be dangerous and I don't want her licking the fabric until it's washed and the smell is gone.
