Review on πŸ’― Reliable TP-LINK ADSL2+ Modem Router TD-8816: Fast and Efficient Internet Connectivity by Roel Lebron

For WindStream and TP-LINK users TD-8816 modem electronics

For WindStream users, there are FAQs about third-party modem support available for WindStream users. Below is a copy/paste of the article. I just had to enter 0/35 VPI/VCI instead of the default 8/35 VPI/VCI along with my user/password to use this modem. Don't forget to update /etc/resolv.conf on your Linux machine to 192.168.1.1 (instead of 192.168.254.254 DNS WindStream), otherwise you'll only be able to access websites without DNS resolution. (ie just by entering an IP address instead of www.foo.net) The MTU/MSSI also noticed that the default TP-LINK MTU/MSS is set to 1480/1400 for PPPoA/PPPoE. I think they should be set to "MTU 1492, MSS 1452". An easy-to-read document on the Internet showing how easy it is to configure MTU can be found at "http://www.dslreports.com/faq/695". Then set MSS to "MSS=MTU-40". (See also the Cisco MTU/MSS documentation provided online.) These modems sound like they are made from Linksys routers, including Linksys firmware. # nmap -O -v 192.168.1.1 Device type: broadband router
