thickness, shape and size are more like a napkin than a chopping board - they're a bit big for a kitchen worktop with ingredients and other utensils on it - you'll need to clear a large area to get its put. However, the material is stiff enough that you can grab it with one hand and shake your sliced food into a bowl, saucepan, etc (it won't droop). Bend it a little to get a funnel shape. And yes, it would probably protect the countertop from knife cuts for a few years, but I wouldn't use it for intensive knife work, more like slicing sandwiches in half. My overall impression is that this is a napkin and not a cutting board. The fact that it comes in a set of 6 leads me to believe the seller knows it is in fact a doily. And I will find a use for it, but not in the kitchen.
