Review on StarTech Com 10Gbps Single Bay Dock SATA by Daniel Pesicek

Can't connect SSDs via USB 3.1 Gen 2

Let me start by loving StarTech hardware. I've used their hard drive docks, cables, network racks, etc. for years. Unfortunately, this USB 3.1 (10Gb/s) single bay dock from StarTech.com isn't ready for mainstream use. I bought it with high hopes for fast data transfer through my desktop's USB 3.1 Gen 2 or 10Gbps port. The docking station is normally connected to a computer running Windows 10 Pro. When copying to a 3.5" Seagate Exos 8TB corporate hard drive, I had no problems copying large files (500-800GB), although transfer speeds were slow compared to SSDs. The main purpose of purchasing this docking station was to easily connect both SATA SSDs. and fixed SATA drives. When using a 1TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD, I was unable to reliably transfer a file through the dock. Transmission failed randomly at various points between 3 and 15 minutes after the start of the operation. The same SSD had NO issues copying the same file via a StarTech SATA to USB-A (USB 3.1 Gen2 10Gb/s) adapter cable with a typical transfer rate of 470-480MB/s. Unfortunately, after several attempts, I have to return it, which is a shame because I really wanted to like it. Verdict: The StarTech.com USB 3.1 (10Gb/s) Single Bay Dock works for hard drives, 3.5-inch HDDs, but not SSDs, for stable file transfers over a USB 3.1 (gen2) connection.
