Review on ๐Ÿ’ช Powerful AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X Processor for Enhanced Performance (YD295XA8AFWOF) by Patrick Pearson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The Threadripper 2950x is a gem and a stubborn rig.

Thing is a beast but its socket is not standard, push down and you're done. At least that's all the personal processor chips I've had. This one in particular has this orange Allen wrench tool that you have to screw in in a specific order to get it to fit properly. You need to start evenly and then proceed sequentially until the top of the screwdriver clicks. I followed that and still had to repot the thing. This involved nervously reassembling my motherboard and gradually plugging things in as I wasn't sure if the thing was dead. Now it works fine but the process was very stressful as I thought I would have to send it back. That being said, the processor performs great and plays well for default settings, and depending on the board you can tweak it with some simple BIOS tweaks for even better performance. I still recommend the CPU for performance, but be prepared to sweat a bit if this is your first computer setup with 16 cores or more. Oh, and my board was the Foxcon socket type. Not sure if that matters, but I've heard from other reviews that another version is better. I am using a Thermaltake AIO 360mm cooler as the Threadripper comes with an AIO cooler adapter in the box which expands your cooler choices.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Very expensive
