Dirty/oxidized contacts?

Like many other reviewers, my cables worked great for a few months and then just stopped. On a whim I tried cleaning the contacts that connect to the watch with a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol and the wires worked again. they are slightly depressed when the cable is connected to the watch and come into contact with the corresponding contact surfaces. The actual contact area, such as tires in contact with the road surface, is very small, and it does not take much time to disturb and disturb a good electrical connection. My guess as to why "real" Garmin cables are so expensive is that these pins are made of gold (or at least gold plated to high industry standards) to prevent oxidation (rust) from building up on them and interfering with electrical connections will. Those unbranded cables probably just have copper pins coated with zinc or something - much cheaper but will need cleaning from time to time.
