Fun but with limitations 2020

I have ALWAYS been looking for a short throw 4K projector to replace my EPSON 1060 and it was the only projector with a throw distance suitable for my room was and adjust the screen size that we had. I liked the 3 chip LCD color at Epson and was hoping to get one of those but ALL the damn projectors were bulky and way too long. The only one that worked wasn't an ultra short hub (I have a family with young kids coming in) playing 4K. Technically, it was my only choice if I wanted to play the PS5 in all its glory. Luckily I have a PS4 Pro and can at least test its 4k and HDR capabilities. The results were sometimes good, sometimes satisfactory. Especially for HDR, more on that later. Pros: - Very sharp 4k picture, good colors, deep reds - Decent brightness in some situations, a darker room is still recommended but might work well with some ambient light - Short throw, very short (0.8 for a 100- inch screen) - Speakers - BEST speakers I've heard on a projector although I'm listening via surround sound which is self set up - Wireless dongle comes with works and includes some apps useful for browsing on the go. (YouTube, Pandora, web browser) but not many app options. No Google or Apple store. - Can be used as a Bluetooth speaker with the ability to turn off the light element, very elegant. - LED lighting with DLP almost completely eliminated the rainbow effect I would see with other DLP projectors - HAS screw mounts on the bottom for hanging from the ceiling (I have) - an application that lets you mirror your phone like for can iOS and Android on the projector. It's too choppy to watch videos on your phone but fun for slideshows and memes or whatever. - Extra output for extra speakers or bluetooth if you want - USB-C input for phones or charging but mine didn't work for video (Samsung s10) MINUS CONTROLLER SUCKS! I didn't get a cool steering wheel controller, I got a plain black crappy button controller that only registers half the time of the dam. Just turning this thing on is a hell of a chore that negates almost all of the positivity that comes with the few apps it has. You have to point it at a specific part of the projector and even then it sometimes doesn't work. Ironically, Eco mode keeps overheating the projector and causing it to shut down. It uses less power and dims the screen, which is fine, but I think it also reduces the performance of the fans too much. HDR on this one sucks. It's too washed out and all the colors are wrong. I tried to recalibrate but it doesn't work. I don't know if an update could fix the problem, but at least I hope it does. Benq has done a better job with its HDR solutions, although still not perfect. The controller is fucking junk, seriously. The included app is empty and only allows you a few choices. If I could use an app with it instead of a dumb controller I'd be better off, but you can't even turn on the damn projector with it. Just turn it off and use the arrows to make a selection. Why can't you just mirror the projector application? I do not know. It has autofocus and keystone, both digital, and can be controlled with just a controller or wheel on the projector. It's a scam because the keystone correction is ONLY vertical and focusing has to be done multiple times as it seems to randomly blur or at least not focus until it obviously warms up. - Dealing with frame interpolation sometimes ruins the signal. There is static around the edges that only goes away when I restart the projector and turn off the setting. I'm just holding it back now. There is some lag, it's actually not that bad, about the same as the Epson I had, I can still enjoy Rocket League, but if you're sensitive to lag the Benq TK850 is a decent one Option for 4k gaming but with longer throw distance :/ So it's pretty good if you need a 4k short throw projector, by far it's basically your only choice if you don't want to use an ultra short throw projector. But can't get HDR, still needs work.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors

Huge, loud fan, light border, not bright enough, and lamp problem, but fantastic audio
