Review on πŸ”ͺ SHAPTON Ceramic KUROMAKU Whetstone Sharpening - High-Quality Abrasive & Finishing Products for Superior Finishing Results by Steve Hauck

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The most profitable stones if you are serious about sharpening.

I sharpen knives as a side job and I use these Kuromaku stones to sharpen all but the very expensive or difficult to sharpen knives. These are not the best stones you can buy but for the price they are great. They cut metal almost as well as the best of the best, but they just feel rough or awkward. Not smooth at all. The stones come in their own case which can be used as a holder for stones which is very handy. The stones are SPLASHING, NOT WET and are very hard so are slow to wear but cut quickly. I use 5000 grit as a finish block, 1000 grit before that and then mostly dress. I would say if you sharpen your knives regularly this is a good choice and they should last you a lifetime although they are flimsy but if you only sharpen a few knives once or twice a year they will probably be redundant . Get a cheaper combo stone and you'll be fine. This is the Japanese market version of the Shapton Pro range and supposedly (according to their marketing team) they're designed for colder, wetter climates and supposedly crack in hot, dry climates, but I live in Southern California, which is pretty nice. It's hot and dry and I've never had a problem with cracks so save some money and buy Kuromaku instead of Shapton Pro signature stones.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dubious purchase for the elderly
