We use this as the top substrate for our crested gecko terrarium. I don't have any live plants there and it sits on a mesh liner to separate it from the hydroballs at the very bottom of the tank. In general, it is very easy to work with him. I liked the price and the fact that it can be reused; but given the price i won't fret if i have to buy more than i have to clean. I used about half a bag for our large 12x12x18 terrarium. Like I said, I don't have live plants so I can't comment on how well it retains moisture for this application, but my gecko never bothered. he didn't seem interested in eating it. This helps retain moisture so the aquarium stays moist even though we only spray it once in the morning and once before bed. It has a very pleasant color and makes your terrarium look beautiful and natural. I would highly recommend it to other Crestie owners for the price, durability, looks and low maintenance.
