Review on πŸ’‘ Philips 392225 22 Watt Circline Fluorescent by Lisa Price

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Good light and working. But it seems cheap so will it last?

I had to replace a 30 year old 'service' lightbulb from Japan. Solid, heavy, and well made, this thing eventually broke after decades of use. I replaced it with this Philips bulb. Right out of the box it looks flimsy; The plastic knot holding the 4 pins is too loose (only the bulb's wires hold it in place) and the cheap plastic tab holding the two together is loose so you can easily rip it apart with your hands. The plastic cap does not completely cover the two ends of the tube. I've read other reports of these new round bulbs breaking easily during installation and considering how easy it was compared to the original I can see why. To avoid this, I first plugged it into the socket at an angle, hooked it onto one of the metal clips, and then pryed the other metal clip back with my finger until I could snap the bulb back into place. This is the opposite of simply pressing firmly on the bulb to use it to pry back both clamps. Do not do that. It looks good, is really bright, and is a fairly warm white instead of a garish blue/cooler white. While I love it, I have no idea if it will continue. If it wasn't so cheap I would feel better. By the way, something loose rattles inside, and that's normal with fluorescent lights, at least from what I've seen. Don't worry about that. UPDATE: It flickers. Pooh. It's hard to see, but if you shake your head you can definitely see the flickering, and it's pretty annoying. I'm using the same ballast as the previous non-flickering light, so this is definitely behavior specific to this lamp.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something
