Review on ๐ŸŽฎ Cisco-Linksys WGA54G: Optimize Your Gaming Experience with Wireless-G Adapter by Matt Travers

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not sure what all configuration secrets are.

Okay, that's not quite right. The secret lies in the declining quality of Linksys software and documentation. But one after anonther. This device worked great right out of the box and currently streams Netflix to a Blu-Ray DVD player at speeds fast enough to watch their HD titles. With a laptop, it only took twenty minutes to set up, test (via speedtest.net) and connect the device. said Nuff. Thanks to Cisco/Linksys for *finally* developing a workable sized power supply! The plug provided with this device is only slightly larger than a three prong plug and takes up no more than one position on a power strip. I would rate this device 5 stars but it was way more expensive than it should be. be, and I don't know yet how long it will be. When my BEFSR41 Ver. 2 routers have some signs, it will take a very, very long time. This router has actually lasted long enough to outlast its usefulness; its WAN port is limited to 10 Mbit/s. Who knew when it was made that ISPs would be pumping out 25Mbps bandwidth by now!? Let's get back to the configuration puzzle. If you already have a secure Wi-Fi network set up in your home, setting up this device is very simple. Unfortunately, Cisco puts a lot of effort into creating setup software and accompanying documentation for its home products because they don't seem to be very good at it. I say "obviously" because I've never had to use them. All of the Linksys products I've had, with the exception of the older laptop PCMCIA Wireless-G adapter, support a range of configuration web pages that are accessed from a static IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.250 in this case). be deployed, which defaults to Unity. There are many instructional sites at the moment, all accessible by simply Googling the model number, that explain how to set up the product in question for its intended purpose. All you have to do is educate yourself (or find a friend or helpful cable TV pro who knows how). The problem, I think, is that so few people are willing to bother to understand what they're doing these days. Thank you public education. That doesn't mean Cisco/Linksys is completely off the hook. They could probably lower the price of this device by $25 or more by redeploying their software development/testing/documentation efforts and simply adding a guide on how to use the configuration web pages, including some information on how/why you need to use encryption and where go for more information. The bottom line is that having a wireless access point on your network poses a very serious security risk unless you know how to set up WEP or other encryption and/or (even better) add MAC address filtering. And that's before you even think about adding such a gaming adapter. What you really need to know is that when setting up your home Wi-Fi network, you are doing nothing but securing the doors and windows of your home. Information is available free of charge. If you can navigate the Revain website and place an order, you can customize this adapter.
